Dry Eye and Red Eye
The function of the tear is not limited to that of moistening the ocular surface but carries out the fundamental activity of nourishing and protecting the ocular surface, collaborating in maintaining the transparency of the cornea in order to guarantee the best visual quality.
An alteration in quantitative or qualitative terms of the tear film gives rise to dry keratoconjunctivitis popularly known as dry eye syndrome. This is an alteration of the balance that regulates the secretion and distribution of the tear film; this causes the ocular surface to be poorly moistened and lubricated.
The dry eye syndrome is defined as multi factorial because the onset depends on several causes including age, unsuitable lifestyles (smoking) the use of certain drugs (beta-blockers, antidepressants, contraceptive pill) prolonged use of especially soft contact lenses.
The prolonged use of computers, tablets, e-readers and smartphones is emerging as one of the main factors contributing more to the onset of the disease.
